Fibromyalgia is an arthritis-related condition that is characterized by generalized pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons coupled with continuing fatigue. This condition is referred to as a "syndrome" because it's a set of signs and symptoms that occur together.
Fibromyalgia is especially confusing and often a misunderstood condition. Because its symptoms are quite common and many laboratory tests are frequently normal, people with fibromyalgia were once told that their condition was "all in their head." This created a feeling of isolation and despair for many fibromyalgia sufferers. However, medical studies have proven that fibromyalgia does indeed exist, and it is estimated to affect about 2 percent of the U.S. population today.
Although no two people with fibromyalgia experience the same symptoms the exact same way, they do experience similar symptoms. Pain is the most common symptom. It usually manifests in multiple tender points on the body where the pain is most intense. These refer to specific points on the neck, shoulders, spine and hips.
Fatigue and sleep disruption are experienced by approximately 90% of people with fibromyalgia. Depression and anxiety are common. Lapses of memory, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of confusion are other common occurrences. Other common accompanying symptoms are migraine headaches, dizziness, jaw pain, tingling limbs, restless leg syndrome, alternating constipation and diarrhea (irritable bowel syndrome), and changing skin color.
There is great hope for fibromyalgia sufferers. Dr. Jain’s practice provides a great array of diagnostic and therapeutic tools to help these patients on the path to wellness.
Fibromyalgia Syndrome Diagnosis
A thorough medical history and physical examination is important in order to rule out other conditions such as bursitis, tendonitis or rheumatoid arthritis, which can mimic FMS symptoms. The presence or absence of tenderness in 11 of 18 specific locations, as well as the presence or absence of other FMS symptoms for three months or longer are also indicators for this diagnosis.
Fibromyalgia Treatment
Dr. Jain and Mount Diablo Wellness provide a broad array of resources for treating FMS on multiple levels. In order to tailor an individualized and effective treatment plan for each patient, the patient’s lifestyle, diet, habits and life stresses will be taken into consideration. The FMS symptoms most commonly addressed include the need for improved sleeping patterns and decreased pain. Stress reduction, anxiety and depression are also addressed. Specific types of exercise including Yoga, may be recommended and taught to the patient, in order to bring oxygen into tight, sore muscles. Positive, therapeutic lifestyle changes will be discussed, and options offered.
Often with stress reduction and mind-body therapies, fibromyalgia may improve and medications may not be necessary. Dr. Jain and her staff give patients the tools to become self-reliant, improve their endurance, and increase their ability to function and thrive.
