Nancy Floyd, MD, PhD
“Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming, from tender stem hath sprung.
This flower, whose fragrance tender, with sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor the darkness everywhere.” 15th c. carol
The rose arises from its thorns to spread beauty to all. So we also can rise out of the thorns of all of our physical, mental and emotional challenges. Let Ayurveda help you find a way.
Nancy Floyd, M.D., Ph.D., obtained her Bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and her M.D. from the University of California at Davis School of Medicine. She completed post graduate training in Pediatrics (Residency Year 1) at the University of Minnesota and in Emergency Medicine (Residency Years 2 & 3) at the University of California, San Francisco - San Francisco General Hospital and Highland Hospital, Oakland, CA.
Her Ayurveda clinical training includes graduation from the California College of Ayurveda, the Ayurveda Holistic Center School in N.Y. (Sw. S.S. Tirtha), and certification in Panchakarma specialty training (PKS) from the California College of Ayurveda, in Ayurveda from the American Institute of Vedic Studies (David Frawley), and in Sanskrit from the Sanskrit Academy (San Jose, CA). She completed eight years of training in Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis and Ayurvedic therapeutics with Dr. M.J. Cravatta, in the tradition of the Maharishi Vedic Medicine system as well as Kriya Baba. She has also studied with many Vaidyas (Ayurvedic Physicians from India), including Vasant Lad, Subhash and Sunade Ranade, R.H. Singh, P.K. Sharma, Bhagavan Dash and others, as well as David Frawley and John Douillard, Ph.D.. She is a California Certified Massage Therapist (CMT).
Dr. Floyd completed a Ph.D. degree in Ayurveda at Westbrook University. Her Ph.D. thesis discussed in depth the method of Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis in which she was trained, and its application to Ayurvedic therapeutics and the design of comprehensive individualized Ayurvedic treatment programs, including Panchakarma and Panchakarma-at-home. Her thesis included a research project in conjunction with the California College of Ayurveda examining the efficacy of comprehensive individualized Ayurvedic treatment programs on 28 common patient symptoms. Patient-reported improvement in eleven symptoms (allergies, acne, anxiety, back pain, constipation, depression, diarrhea, headache, insomnia, joint pain, G.I. reflux) were compared to published placebo responses (no treatment) from the medical literature. The Ayurvedic treatment programs demonstrated greater success in the percentage of patients who experienced improvement compared to published mean placebo responses (from multiple studies) in all eleven symptoms - acne, allergies, anxiety, back pain, constipation, depression, diarrhea, headache, insomnia, joint pain, G.I. reflux, with the exception of the first follow-up visit at two weeks in acne; subsequent follow up visits in acne were superior to published average placebo responses. (See abstract on Research Page.) While the nature of this study (retrospective clinical case series) offers preliminary suggestive findings, higher quality evidence-based studies are needed in Ayurveda.
Her training in Meditation and the Yoga tradition includes many years of study and practice with her spiritual teacher, Mata Amritanandamayi, as well as other teachers (Swami Veda Bharati, Sant Keshavadas, Sri Karunamayi), and past training in the Episcopal prayer traditions and the Records of the Life of Jesus (a study tradition of the New Testament based in modern psychology).
